With the weather now turning that little bit colder we are all looking at putting away those skirts, strappy tops, shorts and t-shirts that we have lived in throughout the summer months.
But with any type of storage there is always the problem of space; or lack of it to be more accurate. Aside from hiring your very own storage space from a professional company there are some things that you can do at home in order to maximise the space that you have and keep those summer dresses packed away neatly ready for next year!
Fold it!
It might seem like the most basic tip when it comes to storing clothes but it is something that is often overlooked. Folding your clothes takes up less space in your cupboard and means that you can get double the amount within it.
However, there is more of a tendency for the piled up clothes to fall over so shelf dividers are a great idea to keep everything standing up neat and tidy (you can choose to buy these or perhaps make your own using open containers).
Vacuum it
There seems to have been a great rise in the use of vacuum bags to store out of season clothes away.
These useful storage tools work with a standard household vacuum, sucking the air out of the bag and reducing the overall size of the item. You can then pop the flat bags into an under bed container or even on top of a wardrobe.
Donate
It is always a great idea to take advantage of any change in season to take stock of the clothes that you have which perhaps you don’t wear. As the summer draws to a close, look at the items that are in your wardrobe that you have not worn and think about donating them to a charity or selling them on to make some extra cash.
Hang it up
Whilst the sandal is the shoe of choice in the summer they may not have so much of an appeal on those colder winter days; but how can you store these pesky strappy shoes? Why not place a rail at the bottom of your wardrobe or cupboard and hang them up; you can use standard coat hangers with a few tweaks in order to crate the ideal shoe hanger. http://www.epbot.com/2011/04/hows-it-hangin-flop-tutorial.html
Don’t forget to label
One mistake that we all make when it comes to storing away out of season clothes is that we forget to label the boxes, bags or containers that they are in. This means that when the new season comes around we will find ourselves rooting around in a variety of hidey holes making more mess then was originally there.
The way that you label is up to you, but make sure that you apply a clear tag for skirts, blouses, tops or shorts.
Hopefully it won’t be long before we are all breaking out the flip flops again, however until that time you can have neat and tidy storage for your out of season clothes!
